Department: Community Based Services (CBS) Job Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: CBS and SED Waiver Manager

Positions Supervised: None Amount of Travel Required: 70%; Shawnee County

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday

Varied hours between 7 am to 7:30 pm: Must be able and willing to adjust work schedules based on their clinical caseload and the needs of individual clients.

Position Summary

Parent Peer Support are defined client centered services with a rehabilitation and recovery focus designed to promote skills for coping with and managing behavioral health symptoms while facilitating the utilization of natural resources and the enhancement of community living skills for the parent/legal guardian raising an individual with behavioral health needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Identifies supports needed for members, family/persons/guardians need to manage member’s conditions and assisting them to access these supports.
  • Assesses strengths and needs of members, family/persons/guardians, identifying barriers to member’s highest level of health and success, locating resources to eliminate these barriers, and advocating on behalf of members, family/persons/ guardians, to ensure that they have supports necessary for improved health.
  • Provides assistance to complete paperwork, provision of information and assistance to access self-help and peer support services, and consideration of the family/persons/guardians need for services such as respite care.
  • Promotes inclusion, consideration is given to accommodating work schedules of families, providing flexibility in terms of hours of service, and teleconferencing.
  • Increase member’s, family/support persons and guardians understanding of effect(s) of the condition on the member’s life, and improve adherence to an agreed upon treatment plan, with the goal of improved overall health and quality of life.
  • Referrals to community supports and services includes determining the services needed for the member to achieve the most successful outcome(s), identifying available resources in the community, assisting the member in advocating for access to care, assisting in the completion of paper work, identifying natural supports if services providers are unavailable in the member’s community, following through until the member has access to needed services, and considering the family/persons/guardian preferences when possible.

Community supports and services include long-term care, mental health and substance use services, housing, transportation, and other community and social services needed by the

member.

  • Develop and enhance family member problem solving skills, coping mechanisms, and strategies for behavior management.
  • Assist family members in understanding the serious emotional disturbed (SED) waiver process and mental health service system.
  • Train family members in diagnosis, interpreting choice of providers, and understanding policies and procedures of FSGC.
  • Participate in internal and external networking activities designed to increases the likelihood of meeting the client and family’s identified needs.
  • Complete clinical documentation (progress notes, etc.) in a timely fashion.
  • Stay informed of agency developments by reading memorandums and other agency related written communication.
  • Respect and demonstrate ability to maintain client confidentiality.
  • Act as an ambassador of Family Service and Guidance Center in the community setting. This may include doing public educational and informational presentations.
  • Supports and actively promotes the vision and mission of Family Service and Guidance Center and the philosophy of the strengths perspective.
  • Other duties as assigned by respective manager or supervisors.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Licensure:

The Parent Peer Support must meet the defined Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services Behavioral Health requirements:

  • Must self -identify as a person with lived experience in the identified behavioral health area in which they work.
  • Must be certified by KDADS as Kansas Parent Peer Support Provider: (Certification will be provided after hire.)
    • Kansas Parent Peer Support provider in Training (level one) or
    • Kansas Certified Parent Peer Specialist, (certified level one and level two)
  • High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of education/experience in a human service field
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, a good driving record and a reliable vehicle are required.
  • Must successfully pass the KBI, DCF Central Registry and all other background investigations.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children and families
  • Prefer experience working with serious emotional disturbance (SED) population in professional or personal setting
  • Passion and desire to work with children, adolescents and adults across the lifespan

Other Physical Requirements:

Parent Peer Support Specialist must have sufficient ambulatory capabilities to work with children and adolescents in the office setting. Position may require the ability to use physical holding (MAB) with children and adolescents exhibiting out of control behaviors.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Office and Community-Based working environment; requires flexible schedule; frequent interruptions occur; expected to deal with individuals in crisis; risk of exposure to aggressive and/or acting out (verbal and physical) children, youth and adults, and exposure to low socioeconomic homes and neighborhoods.
