So I was driving home from work yesterday and suddenly my 2015 Kia Optima started making this rhythmic knocking noise from the engine bay that gets faster as I accelerate, and honestly my heart just sank because I know that sound is never anything good. I pulled over immediately, checked the oil which was at the right level and looked clean, but the noise persisted even after letting the car cool down for an hour. I’ve been reading up on these GDI engines and apparently they’re prone to carbon buildup on the intake valves, but the knocking sounds more bottom-end to me which makes me worried about rod bearings or something even more serious. The car has about 160,000 km on it and I’ve always serviced it regularly, but I know these engines have had some recalls in other markets for connecting rod issues. I called around to a few garages in Sharjah and got quotes ranging from 2,000 to over 10,000 dirhams depending on what they find, which is honestly terrifying because the car is probably only worth about 15,000 at this point. A friend who drives a Sorento told me about getting Reliable Kia Repair at 800Sayara Sharjah and said they actually have experience with these specific engine issues and can sometimes fix them without a full replacement if it’s caught early enough. I’m really hoping it’s something minor like a stuck fuel injector or a timing chain tensioner rather than a full bottom-end rebuild, but I’m preparing myself for the worst. Has anyone here had engine knocking on their Kia and what ended up being the actual cause? I’m trying to figure out whether I should get it diagnosed properly or just start looking for a new car.
